Ahhh, Vermont!

(Today's title is a quote from John Phillips)

Max came for one last sleep-over last night. Early this morning, we three met up with Christelle, and we all attended his very first ice hockey lesson, at the Kents Hill state-of-the-art ice rink.

What a sight – little kids, age four to seven, all decked out in helmets, pads from shoulders to ankles, gloves, sticks, and ice skates. With their yellow jerseys, and black helmet/pants/gloves, it looked like a swarm of little bumblebees on the ice. For some, this was their first time on the ice.

Click on the above photo, and see the "walker"-type apparatus used by new little skaters.

Max had been on the ice a couple of times before, but not dressed like "Bibendum." Nevertheless, he took off at full tilt, getting right up each time he fell.
At any given time, several kids were down on the ice, and some couldn’t get up (like upside-down turtles) without help. Coaches and older, more experienced hockey players stayed close to the little bees throughout the lesson, and did a great job. Parents on the sidelines were smiling a lot, and snapping photos.

Brian joined us to watch part of the lesson.

What a schedule he has had this weekend. He was on duty last night from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. This involved being on dorm patrol, and available to counsel with students. And this was after a long day of accompanying his cross-country team to an “away” meet, held in the cold and rain. Then, this morning, he left at 10 a.m. to chaperone students on an all day  field trip to Portland, Maine. Also, Brian is teaching French I, II, III, and IV, so most of his “off” time is spent lesson planning. Whew.

After a great big wonderful hug, we left the busy Beards, and Maine, and drove to Vermont. What a sweet, happy time we have had with our family these 2 weeks.

We stopped just 15 miles short of the campground where we always stay when in Vermont. We did not want to arrive at night, not easy on these winding country roads. We are spending the night at a rest stop/information center just south of Brattleboro. We have free WiFi, and phone service! We’ll get a good night’s rest, and drive on to Camporama (sheesh, what a name) in the morning.

We left Maine in peak color time. The roads were lined with vivid, beautiful colors. Here in southern Vermont, the colors are just now creeping into the area , so hopefully, we will witness another changing of the leaves in the 10 or so days we are here.

This is by far, the NICEST rest area we have ever stopped at.

WE MISS OUR MAX, ALREADY!

(250 miles)

  1. Max looks like a playa in that uniform...already on his way to becoming a little man. I know you miss him already!
